Many lessons were learned today, some the hard way. You know, things like DON’T SLOW DOWN! After just missing the first wipeout, I did catch a few riders falling over in the steep turn (video). Shoutout to all the brave folks who rode today.
It was a great day of racing which slid in just before the storm hit. It was a wonderful thing because this velodrome in Blaine Minnesota is outdoors and is unridable when wet. The thing is ginormous and a little intimidating when you stand next to it and realize how steep it is. If you get scared, remember, pedal fast! (video)
There was a tutorial (video) and warmup session (video) followed by racing (video). Being completely new to track, it was great to be educated by people who know what they’re doing. I’m grateful to everyone for embracing me and allowing me to photograph and join the community on my first day here.
After a couple races, people started to settle in and figure out where they needed to be, which provided for some exciting moments. Thanks to anyone who smiled for a picture!
“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” -Anthony Bourdain
